Today I’ve decided to skip the first playgroup session of the year and bring Ethan for a blood check up instead. Kinda stupid to skip fun and go for pain. We actually went last Friday morning but had to wait for 30 minutes and Eddie’s got to work. I asked the staff about how they are going to take blood sample from a 22-month old and she told me depending on what the doctor wanted to test, but normally it’ll be just a prick. That kind of relieved me for the weekend. Today when Ethan’s name was called I asked again and she told me that because they need to check his iron level therefore more blood is needed and a ‘prick’ won’t do. Yes, it had to be the needle into the vein. Both Eddie and I were afraid that it would be that.
She told me to sit Ethan down on my lap and hold his left arm while she takes the blood from his right. She tried to take from inside the elbow at first but couldn’t so she took from the back of his hand instead. Ethan knew something is up and tried to fight it but obviously he’s not strong enough. Once the needle poked through his tears started to roll and dripped on my arm. Immediately I felt the pain in my heart as if the needle had gone through it and tried to stop my tears. The process took less than 30 seconds but it feels so much longer. After that she put a band-aid on his hand but he peeled it off (we can’t seem to band-aid him because of that) so she put another one and we tried to distract him with a biscuit. He was still crying with the biscuit on his left hand until we asked him to push the button on the lift. He was alright after but still managed to peel the band-aid off in the car. He kept scratching the wound and I kept distracting him.
We had dim sums for lunch and proceeded to go home to let Ethan take his nap. When we arrived home, I took him out from his car seat and put him down to let him walk to the door. He decided to run instead and guess what? He fell face flat on the cement floor (with rough sands). He fell on his knees first and it was supposed to stop there but he couldn’t balance himself and the face went right down. I quickly picked him up and saw his right side face scratched, my heart sank second time today. Brought him in and clean his wound with wet tissues. He also scratched the back of his left hand, so now both hands injured. He cried for the longest time I’ve remembered. Couldn’t comfort him with anything at all, books, stickers, nothing. He’d played with them for a while then remembered where it hurt and started crying again. In the end he stopped when I asked if he want to watch his dvd. All the time he kept scratching the wound on his left hand and I kept taking his hand away.
After the show ended I told him to go into the room to take a nap. He ejected the player and took the dvd out then turned of the tv. As he was walking into the room he tripped on his toy but didn’t fall, but started crying again. I took him into the room and comforted him and he slept not long after.

My poor baby

Day 2

Day 4
Ethan is a very active boy at home, and out. He always climbs on the chair and even though he fell a few times he’d still do it. I really hope this accident will remind him not to run everywhere again… I doubt it.

very active your boy
I can handle his activeness at home by myself (fortunately there’s nothing much to be active about at home) but if we go out I can hardly keep up with him.
