Many people that I know have enjoyed or are going to enjoy the joyous occasion of a new arrival. I guess this year of the golden pig is a very good year to have babies? I’m here to congratulate a good friend of mine whom I met at college on her newborn girl, Mikki. No pictures from her mummy yet, she’s lost touch with the internet, being a very busy woman with both her husband and her own business.
I spoke to her on the phone when I went back to KL (she lives in Cameron Highlands and was too inconvenient to travel with her pregnancy, normally she’d come to KL when I’m there) and she mentioned that she had already found a nanny for her child. The plan was to send her child to the nanny after the confinement and she goes back to work. Even though I didn’t have a job before I had Ethan, I feel so bad for some of the mummies in Malaysia who had no choice but to leave their children with someone else while they go to work. I know it must be very hard for them. It’s hard for me just to leave Ethan with someone for a day. Kind of missed what happened with him on that particular day.
Over here though, mothers have a choice on whether to return to their old job or not. They are given maternity leave, different jobs different time, and then their position is held for them until they decide on whether they want it back or not. Some mothers I know don’t return until at least one year and they normally go back as part-timers. By that I mean one to three days a week of work. Some mothers stopped working totally. It’s a good thing that we receive benefits from the government because we could hardly survive with Eddie’s salary alone.
To all mothers in the world, working or not, I SALUTE YOU!
